This is an amazing viral marketing campaign that integrates right into a social network without feeling too intrusive. A simple premise for a brilliant online short by Spike Jonze.

Freelance Whales

March 31st, 2010

This is one of those bands that makes you wish you were in it. Checked them out at the Biltmore on a Monday night and it was a packed house. Freelance Whales were the openers for Bear in Heaven and Cymbals eat Guitars but I gotta say these guys upstaged them both. Click on their fantastic cover art and give them a good listen.

Silk Screened Band Posters + Sofia Coppola

March 28th, 2010

A few things I’m keen on right now.

1. These. There’s something nostalgic in these colors schemes and elements.
I’ll be creating a series of Wall Tattoos with these designs in mind.

  		 5 colors / 18" x 24"  		 4 colors / 18" x 24"

  		 5 colors / 18" x 24"  		 2 colors / 19" x 25"

2. This. I’m watching Lost in Translation and I forgot how funny and, like the posters above, Nostalgic it is.
Can’t wait to hit Japan this year. I’ll be looking to be heavily influenced by the culture and translating that into the Collection.

re: TRASHing Coachella

March 21st, 2010

I’ve been to Coachella twice now and as far as North American festivals go, this one is the best. This year’s line up… well see for yourself www.coachella.com. I submitted some Surface work for the TRASHed design competition and was shortlisted from thousands of entries. The goal is the promote recycling for future generations by turning a 96 gallon trashbin into a work of design.

My submission is more iconic and conceptual at this point. The premis was inspired by Shepard Fairey’s Obey campaigns, Samurai masks used to instill fear in their enemies, Maori tattoos and the Karma Police. I figure in order to appeal to Californian youth, the image has to be Iconic, direct and an attempt to make recycling fun with undertones of sarcasm.

ING Direct gets a revamp

March 9th, 2010

ING Direct commissioned Surface Collective to be a part of their renovation efforts pre-Olympics. They installed a living wall with plants from floor to ceiling and we complimented that with our nature to city inspired theme for their feature walls. The ING orange maple leafs was the touch of Canadian spirit that showed their support for the 2010 Olympics.

Surface deals a full deck for the Starwalk of River Rock Casinos

March 9th, 2010

River Rock Casinos in Richmond, BC required a frosted glass designs for their Starwalk leading from the parking lot to the Casino. 50 windows in total so developing a deck of cards made sense but we raised it to another level. Contemporary graphics inspired by our local native artisans with iconic BC nature elements integrated into the King,Queen and Jack. 4s and 5s in Chinese culture are considered bad luck so in case you are down there and you are wondering why we have been replaced with all 8s. Yes, we can count. Project management and interior design lead by Courtney Ford.
